Business AI Readiness Checklist and Assessment

Business AI readiness is not a single yes-or-no answer. It is a profile across five areas: the workflows you would apply AI to, the data those workflows depend on, the people who would run and review the output, the governance that keeps it safe, and the return you expect. A company can be very ready in one area and not ready in another, which is exactly why a checklist beats a gut call.

The practical goal of an assessment is not to score the whole company. It is to find one workflow that scores well across all five areas, because that is your first AI project. Score each area from 1 (not ready) to 5 (ready) for the specific workflow you have in mind. Workflows: is the work repeated, well understood, and stable, with a clear example of a good result? Data: is the source material accessible, reasonably clean, and allowed to be used? People: is there an owner who can run the tool and a reviewer who can judge the output? Governance: are the rules clear for what AI must not do, how customer or sensitive data is handled, and who is accountable? Return: can you measure the win in time saved, faster response, fewer errors, or higher conversion?

A workflow that scores 4 or 5 across all five areas is ready to pilot now. A workflow with one low score tells you exactly what to fix first — usually data access or a missing reviewer — before AI is worth the effort.

If most workflows land at 4 to 5 across the board, your business is ready and the only question is which project to run first — choose the one with the highest return and lowest risk. If scores cluster at 2 to 3, you are partially ready: the opportunity is real but a foundation gap (scattered data, no clear reviewer, vague success metric) will sabotage a pilot until it is closed.

If most areas score 1 to 2, the honest answer is to wait and fix foundations rather than buy a tool. Forcing AI onto an unstable process or inaccessible data reliably wastes money. Our data readiness checklist is the right next step when data is the weak area.

As the team grows, governance moves from a footnote to a requirement. An enterprise AI checklist should add: an approved-tools list so staff are not pasting sensitive data into unvetted services, a clear rule for which decisions always need a human, a record of where AI is used, and a named owner accountable for each use case.

None of this needs a heavy committee for a first project. It needs one written page: what AI may do, what it must never do, which tool is approved, and who reviews the output. Get that right on the first workflow and scaling to the next one is mostly repetition.

Take the highest-scoring workflow and define five things: the task, the owner, the tool, the review step, and the success metric. If you can fill in all five, run a two-week pilot and compare the result to your current process. If you cannot, the blank field is the next thing to fix.
